2009 Renard Viognier, Sonoma hillsides, Kick Ranch
Our 2009 Viognier comes from a western facing sloping hillside in the Rincon Valley. There is as stunning view of the Petaluma gap from the vineyard. It also means that the fog you can see in the distance is brewing its way towards the vineyard every night, cooling it down and allowing for the Viognier to maintain acidity and still ripen. The finished wine is a forward, opulent expression of Viognier.
I picked the fruit fairly ripe but I wanted to retain the natural acidity, so it was fermented without secondary malolactic fermentation in neutral barrels. No new oak was used for this wine, as I did not want the crisp vibrant fruit served on a bed of toothpicks! The aromatics are pure Viognier – peach and jasmine with some mandarin orange. The mouth follows through with the same full, ripe stone fruit, balanced by bright, flinty citrus attributes, reminiscent of the vibrant acidity of Condrieu. The palate weight also boasts of this steely acidity and nervosity.
Robert Parker: "Renard's always well-made Viognier Kick Ranch is an intense white boasting floral, honeysuckle, and white peach characteristics, medium to full-body, excellent acidity, and loads of texture as well as length. This is a serious Viognier selling at a very fair price."
